The Minister of Works, Mr Mike Onolememen, in Abuja on Tuesday, lamented the high rate of accidents being witnessed onNigerian roads.
To this end, he urged the Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC) to step up its awareness campaign for road users on safety.
The minister spoke when he received a road safety and sub-Sahara African transport programme specialist, Mr Per Mathiasen, in his office, led by the FRSC Corps Marshal, Mr Osita Chidoka and other top officers of the corps.
Onolememen said he agreed with the visiting Denmark-born specialist that FRSC still had a lot to do in reducing road crashes despite successes already recorded.
He expressed satisfaction that the safe corridors programme of the corps had been replicated in other African countries, and spearheaded by the World Bank.
According to him, his ministry is collaborating with FRSC to ensure that the nation's road infrastructure are put to appropriateuse as a way to realise what he described as lofty programme of safe corridors initiative, which aims at reducing road accidents by 50 per cent.
Onolememen was emphatic that cases of accidents on Abuja, theFederal Capital Territory (FCT) roads were worrisome and stated that "we are not exactly where we want to be at this time but we are making efforts to get there."
Earlier, Mathiasen described FRSC as a "truly dedicated agency," adding that Nigeria and Argentina were selected by the World Bank to serve as models under the sub-Sahara African transport programme, which he said sought to strengthen road safety indices in the region.
