THE Federal Government, on Tuesday, said budgetary allocation would be made in the 2013 Budget for upgrading of all Federal Technical Colleges in order to promote technical and vocational education in the country.
Minister of State for Education, Mr Nyesom Wike, made this known in Abuja, at a meeting with managers of Federal Unity Colleges and some higher institutions on the 2013 budget proposal.
Wike equally called on the state governments and other stakeholders in the sub-sector to join hands with the Federal Government's drive to reposition the basic education system.
He said the Federal Government had invested so much in the basic education sub-sector through its intervention strategies witha view to improving the system.
The minister noted that though basic education was not directly the responsibility of the Federal Government, the intervention initiatives were to assist the states to put the system on the right track, stressing that poor quality at the basic level had direct impact on tertiary education.
The minister urged the principals to prioritise their projects in the 2013 budget, saying that government would continue the upgrade of the Unity Schools by taking a selected number per zone.
Wike further disclosed that the process was on to absorb those qualified part-time teachers in the schools while about 1,000 teachers in core subjects – Mathematics, English Language and Science –related subjects would be employed.
