Electricity bills: Jonathan issues 3-month ultimatumto indebted MDAs

MINISTRIES, departments and agencies of
government which shun paying electricity bills have
been directed by President Goodluck Jonathan to
settle the bills within a period of three months.
The president also directed that all unsettled bills
after the three months period will be deducted by the
Accountant-General of the Federation from the
overhead allocation of the concerned ministries,
departments and agencies.
The directive was contained in a circular by the
Secretary to the Government of the Federation,
Senator Anyim Pius Anyim and made available to the
Nigerian Tribune through the Federal Ministry of
Information.
The circular warned that the non-payment of
electricity bills by government ministries,
departments and agencies was a disincentive to the
private sector investment in the power sector and
portended a danger to the sustainability of the Power
Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) and other allied
entities.
"President Jonathan has directed all ministries,
departments and agencies of government to settle
all unpaid electricity bills within a period of three
months," the circular read.
