PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan will today inaugurate the first
locally-made armoured personnel carrier (APC) produced by the Nigerian
Army, as part of efforts to combat the security challenges currently facing the country.
This is one of the activities lined up as part of the 155th
anniversary celebration of the Nigerian Army, just as the Chief of Army
Staff, Lieutenant-General Azubui-ke Ihejirika, said the current security
challenges facing the country should not be left in the hands of the
army and other security agencies alone, but must be a partnership issue
for all Nigerians.
Ihejirika made the announcement while briefing newsmen on the activities lined up for the event.
The army chief, who was represented by the chairman, 2012 Army Day
Celebration, Major-General Bitrus Kwaji, said the choice of Kaduna as
venue of the celebration was deliberate, as the army wanted to use the
opportunity to assure Nigerians that despite the security challenges,
Kaduna still remained the home of the army and, therefore, could never
be abandoned.
Ihejirika disclosed that the high point of the celebration in Jaji,
Kaduna State, was the unveiling of the Nigerian built APC by President
Goodluck Jonathan.
