Turkish Twitter user jailed for using Allah in his handle

In a bizarre incident, a twitter user was jailed for using the word ‘Allah’ in his twitter handle.

According to a report in Mashable, a Turkish man was sentenced to 15 months in prison for ‘using a handle that was deemed religiously offensive.’

‘The user, Allah (c.c.), or @CenabiAllah, was charged with “humiliating the religious values accepted by a part of the people,’ Mashable report said.

He had apparently used ‘Allah’ in his twitter handle and tweeted against the government.

In his twitter handle he wrote, “In my present state of mind, I would not have created the little finger of human beings.”

“Here (heaven) is very safe because there is no police,” he tweeted.

The Turkish government had banned Twitter on March 21 after a few users posted leaked video streams against some of the government officials, according to Reuters.

Allah (c.c.)’s tweets were in reference to the police crackdown on protesters during mass anti-government demonstrations in June last year.

The government had lifted the ban in the first week of April after it had faced widespread international condemnation.
