The Chairman of Transcorp Plc., Mr. Tony Elumelu,
has said his mother was kidnapped by gunmen from her farm in Delta State
recently because of the firm’s investment in a gas-rich oil block and
2.4 metric tonne gas-powered fertiliser plant in Burutu, Delta State.
Elumelu’s mother was kidnapped from her farm in
Onicha-Ukwu, Delta State in April by five gunmen and taken to an unknown
destination.
She was rescued after some days.
Reminiscing on the incident on Twitter on
Saturday, the former Group Managing Director of UBA Plc said his mother
was kidnapped two weeks after the deal for the fertiliser plant was
signed.
“Two weeks after the plant deal was signed, my mum
was kidnapped. Next I got an email asking, ‘Are you sure Delta is the
right location for this investment’?
“Thankfully, with the help of Governor Uduaghan and
federal security agencies, we were able to deal with that situation very
quickly.
“Economic prosperity is the enemy of crime; as we build one, we destroy the other,” he wrote.
