No fewer than 28 persons have been arrested in
Calabar, the Cross River State capital, for alleged cult-related
activities in the last two weeks.
Two rival cult groups had clashed in Calabar, vandalising property in the process recently.
The 13 Brigade of the Nigerian Army arrested 14 persons allegedly to be cult members on Monday following the clash.
However, on Friday, the Quick Intervention Squad
arrested 14 other suspects in different locations in the metropolis,
recovering substance suspected to be Indian hemp and cocaine as well as
matchets from some of them.
Speaking on behalf of the QIS in Calabar on Friday,
Mr. Innocent Ayabotu, said the squad got a report that some suspected
cultists were hiding in a shrine near Etim Edem Park and moved to
confront them.
According to him, they were arrested when the squad raided the shrine.
Ayabotu added that areas where the cult activities
had been fierce in the state capital such as Jebbs Street, Anantigha
area, Atamunu, Ibesikpo and Afokang, were raided with more arrests made.
The State Security Adviser, Mr. Rekpene Bassey, said the state government would not tolerate violence.
He said, “The state government has taken upon herself
to embark on social and situational prevention measures against the
menace of cultism.”
