Constable who raped 11-yr-old dies
A police constable attached to the C Department of the Ebonyi State command headquarters, who allegedly raped an 11-year-old girl, has died in his office in Abakaliki, the state capital.
The policeman, whose name was given as Eze Ogbonna, died on Monday and was alleged to have committed the offence on September 22, while the matter was reported to the police authorities.
According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sylvester Igbo, the alleged defilement was carried out in a lock up shop on Udensi Street, beside the police barracks in Abakaliki.
Igbo said the mother of the girl noticed blood stains on the girl’s dress and upon questioning, she alleged that she was raped by the deceased policeman.
The police image maker stated that “the mother said what gave rise to her suspicion was that she saw her daughter with her clothes stained with blood, and as a result, she started asking her questions, and the daughter opened up.”
He added that the police constable was arrested, but later released on self-recognition, stating that investigation into the matter was on when the corporal died.
He further said that the girl had been taken to the hospital for treatment, adding that the law on rape provides for a lifetime imprisonment of any individual upon conviction.
