HIV/AIDS drops in Adamawa
THE prevalent rate of HIV/AIDS has dropped to 3.8 per cent from 6.8 per cent, thus placing Adamawa State in the third position in the North-East sub-region as the fight against it is gaining ground.
The executive secretary for Adamawa State Agency For the Control of HIV/AIDS (ADSACA), Dr Suleman Banu, who made the disclosure, said the statistics covered the tests conducted between January and June.
The executive secretary, who spoke at a press conference preparatory to HIV/AIDS programme development Project II (HPDP II) launch, at the NUJ press centre, in Yola, on Tuesday, maintained that the state's prevalence rate was gradually dropping.
He said within the period under review, 38,251 people were counselled and tested for HIV (HCT), out of which 3,429 tested positive. He said10,753 patients were on ARV across the state.
Dr Banu also disclosed that the World Bank had approved grants of $5 million to mitigate the HIV/AIDS endemic in the state as a result of the agency’s efforts in meeting the World Bank’s target within its framework.
He stated further that the agency had in the area of care and support to people living with HIV/AIDS procured and distributed food items worth millions of naira.
“Our mandate as an agency is to coordinate the multi-sectored response to HIV/AIDS endemic and resource mobilisation for fighting the pandemic in the state while our goal is to reduce the incidence and prevalence in the state to the barest minimum by 2015,” he stated.
