The Federal Government has directed the concessionaire of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Bi-Courtney Highway Services Limited, to expedite action on the reconstruction of the road.
It specifically asked Bi-Courtney to get the road to an appreciable level before Christmas.
The road, one of the busiest in the country, normally witnesses significant increase in traffic volume during Christmas when many travel home for end of the year festivities.
The Director, Public Private Partnership, Federal Ministry of Works, Mr. Tunde Ekunsumi, who led a Federal Government delegation on an inspection of the road on Monday, gave the government’s position on the reconstruction work, which commenced on September 21, after an assessment of the road.
He said, “If you know the history of this road, you will know that this is the time to ensure this road is put in the right shape to ensure that people travelling in the next few weeks for Christmas enjoy a smooth ride. They started work on September 21, and today, it is just one month and some few days.
“We have come to ensure that Bi-Courtney gets its contractors on site with more than one gang, if possible three or four gangs. We are entering the dry season and we are just giving them some advice on how to have an impetus on this work with regard to the huge traffic of the Yuletide season we are going into.”
He expressed satisfaction with the quality of the ongoing work on the road.
Ekunsunmi, however, urged Bi-Courtney to ensure timely completion of the project.
He said that the government would offer the concessionaire all the necessary support for a successful delivery of the project.
While also expressing confidence in the capability of the contractor hired by the concessionaire, Messrs Borini Prono, to deliver a good job and attain the maximum standard set for the project, Ekunsumi said, “Whatever you have seen here, they have worked according to the procedure and general specification of both the ministry and international standards.”
Meanwhile, the other contractor hired by Bi-Courtney for a different section of the project, CCC, has not commenced work.
