Veteran actor, Ogungbe, dies at 78

Veteran Yoruba actor, Akin Ogungbe, died on Wednesday after a brief illness in Ogun State.

He was aged 78.

His son, Segun, an actor, confirmed the incident to our correspondent over the telephone.

The younger Ogungbe said he was on a location when a text message from a family member informed him of his father’s death.

He said, ‘‘I think it is the usual thing with old age. He was not sick before he died this morning (Wednesday).’’

The older Ogungbe, fondly called Ireke Onibudo, following his role in the movie, also produced Lisabi Agbongbo Akala, a historical play about an Egba warrior.

An actor, Prince Jide Kosoko, said the nation’s movie industry had lost “a father, leader of leaders and notable professional.”

He added, ‘‘He led an exemplary life. A lot of people like the late Ishola Ogunshola aka Isho Pepper, Chief Jimoh Aliu, Charles Olumo a.k.a Agbako and the late Afolabi Afolayan popularly known as Jaguar trained under him.’

Also, Chief Jimoh Aliu, popularly called Aworo, described the late Ogungbe as a very good boss who taught him the rudiments of acting.
