Oba Adeniji-Adele Boxing carnival holds July 12 in Lagos

Lagos – The family of a former of  Oba of Lagos, Oba Dipo Adeniji-Adele, will stage a boxing carnival to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his death, a family member said.
One of the sons of the late Oba, Adegboyega Adeniji-Adele, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Thursday that the event would be used as a memorial for the Oba, who was a boxer at his youth.
According to Adeniji-Adele, a boxing coach, it was being planned as a fitting remembrance of his reign in Lagos, which spanned a 15-year period, from 1949 to 1964.

“The late Oba of Lagos, Oba Musende Dipo Adeniji-Adele, was a boxer himself, he practiced boxing even while in the human war front.

“While he was in Nigeria, he supported boxing with every passion he had before he died.
“So I feel there is a reason for us to give him a befitting memorial since we are organising the 50th  anniversary of his departure from this earth.

“That is going to take place in Lagos and we are going to organise a boxing event for him in Lagos Island, which is going to be a boxing carnival.

“It is going to involve about three local governments: that is Lagos Island East, Lagos Island West and Obalende local governments.
“We want to put it on the day he departed this world that is the 12th July, that is the day we are going to organise it.
Oba Adeniji-Adele was a civil servant before his enthronement as Oba in 1949. He was also the Vice-President of the Senate in the first Republic. (NAN)
