When you take Omega-3, you increases the chances of having Prostrate Cancer... Oya click to read More.

WASHINGTON (AFP) – US scientists said Wednesday they have confirmed a surprising 2011 study that found a higher risk of prostate cancer among men who consume omega-3 fatty acids, raising new questions about the safety of supplements.

The research in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute reported a 71 percent higher risk for dangerous high-grade prostate cancer among men who ate fatty fish or took fish-oil supplements, which are often touted for their anti-inflammatory properties.

"We've shown once again that use of nutritional supplements may be harmful," said Alan Kristal, researcher at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and senior author of the paper.

Scientists are still puzzled as to why omega-3s appear linked to a greater risk of prostate cancer, but they said the findings suggest they are somehow involved in the formation of tumors.

The same team of researchers published similar findings in 2011, linking high blood concentrations of DHA to a more than double risk of high-grade prostate cancer, which is more likely to be fatal than other types.

A large European study also found the same omega-3 and prostate cancer link.

"The consistency of these findings suggests that these fatty acids are involved in prostate tumorigenesis and recommendations to increase long-chain omega-3 fatty acid intake, in particular through supplementation, should consider its potential risks," the US study said.

Omega 3 supplement: links with prostate cancer

The difference in blood concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids between the highest and lowest risk groups was about 2.5 percentage points (3.2 percent vs. 5.7 percent), or just higher than the effect of eating salmon twice a week, Kristal said.
The latest study was based on an analysis of specimens and data from a large randomized, controlled trial that tested whether selenium and vitamin E would reduce prostate cancer risk.

The trial, known as SELECT (the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial), found that vitamin E raised the prostate cancer risk and selenium showed no impact either way.

For the July 11 study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, researchers analyzed the data on 834 men diagnosed with prostate cancer and compared them to a random sample of 1,393 taken from the SELECT trial.

Those who had high blood concentrations of the fatty acids EPA, DPA and DHA were shown to have a 71 percent increased risk of high-grade prostate cancer.

The increased risk of low grade prostate cancer was 44 percent higher in those with elevated fatty acid levels, and the combined risk was 43 percent for all prostate cancers.

Due to the nature of the study, it was not possible to tell for certain whether the elevated blood levels were due to men taking supplements or eating fish rich in omega-3s.

However, Franklin Lowe, associate director of the department of urology at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital in New York, said the findings should remind consumers that supplements may not help, and may even do harm.

"In general, there is nothing that has been proven to actually limit the risk of prostate cancer," said Lowe, who was not involved in the study.

"For the most part, doctors do not recommend this stuff because it is unclear what the true benefits are for most of the supplements that people take."

LUTH acquires scanner that detects death in 10 seconds

Lagos University Teaching Hospital LUTH said they have acquired a CT scan equipment that has the capacity to run a check on all organs of the body, from head to toe in less than 10 seconds and fish out a patients death points for immediate treatment. The machine, called the 128-slice Aquillon CT scanner is the first of it's kind in West Africa.
Speaking on the machine, the Chief Medical Director, LUTH, Professor Akin Osibogun told Nigerian Tribune:
"The Aquillon CT scanner is a 128-scanner and the main advantage it has over other CT scanners of earlier generations is its ability to penetrate deeper into the tissues and organs to show clearly the state of those tissues and organs. Of course the CT scanner is an imaging device and because it is able to provide images of tissues and organs inside the body. We are able to see the state in which those tissues and organs are and we are able to make diagnosis that help us to provide appropriate treatment for the patients.
"Earlier generations CT scanners are of course far better in terms of diagnostic capability than the x-ray because they provide clearer definitions than the x-ray but moving to a 128-slice CT scanner, in fact, that it is in terms of where current knowledge is, with regards to ability to get clearer images of tissues and organs that are internal to the body and therefore we are able to make better diagnosis. A further advantage of the 128-CT scanner is its speed with which it works and that means it is able to capture parts of the body that are in motion.
"So the Aquillon CT scanner is a very fast machine, able to pick items in motion and that advantage enables us now to study even the heart as it is beating and as it is pumping out blood, so we are able to study the arteries, the veins as the blood flow through them, so if there is a thin blockage or a blockage is developing, the scanner is able to pick it."
"So in coronary heart disease for instance, the scanner is a vast advantage over other imaging devices because we are able to pick them up early and we can then advise that patient on dietary changes or whatever changes that are necessary and if you have the capability, you can actually combine it with what we called interventional cardiology.
"You can remove small plague or small particles that are already forming on the way. It is just simply by introducing a catheter, you guide the catheter under the imaging device and go to where you want to go and remove what you want to remove, without opening the chest. The CT scanner can be combined to some extent with the interventional cardiology which we would introduce at a latter point. At this point because we just acquired the equipment, we will be using it largely for diagnostic methods to pick disease conditions and do that in a more precise manner."
Commenting about possible kidney transplant in Nigeria, LUTH Chief MD said that the procedure was possible at the hospital with just N3 million but the donor must be a relative of the patient.
"Maybe if you help us make that public, that all they need to do, is to bring a relative who is willing to donate kidneys to them and with N3 million, we work them up, carry out the transplant and follow them up" he stated.

Supermom Reality TV Show is Back! Register great Mother today!

Supermom is back. Promoters of the reality show that celebrates and reward mothers have announced commencement of the fourth edition with tinkered model and focus. This year's edition will not be celebrating biological mothers but women who gave and are still giving their all to children they didn't 'mothered' (give birth to).

Supermom which is sponsored by Procter & Gamble; makers of Safeguard, Ariel, Pampers, Always and Promasidor; makers of Onga seasoning and Cowbell is in the fourth year running and has consistently celebrated mothers who through dint of rare sacrifices raised their children to enviable position in the society.

The first and second editions focused on mothers whose stories their children told with emotive conviction. The stories bordered on the sacrifice, pain and sheer hardship that 13 women went through in raising their kids. Some of them had their men watching helplessly beside or behind them as the case may be while for some others the supposed traditional bread winners were nowhere to be found. Their stories were told with short dramas while the eventual winners were decided via votes from members of the public.
The first set of winners won brand new house, the first runner up, a brand new car while the second runner up smiled home with cash prize.

The focused shifted last year with mothers of celebrities put on the spot. From KSB to Julius Agwu, mothers of 13 celebrities gave rare personal accounts of how the famous faces were raised. Some stories moved the audience to tears while others invoked pensive mood laced with mild laughter brought about by knowing assurance that the end justified the means.
Mrs. Gladys Asuquo [mother of Cohbams] won the show and Mrs. Omobonike Anike [mother of Abass Akande PK1] and Mrs. Martinez Sanni [mother of Skales] took the second and third position respectively.

They won N2million, N1million and N500,000 respectively which was shared between them and motherless babies homes of their choice [SOS Village Isolo by Cohbams and Obesere] while [Red Cross in Makoko] by Skales.

This year the focused is on mothers who raised children they did not give birth to. The founders of motherless babies' homes naturally take the front rolls but the stories of mothers with heart of gold did not start and end within the four walls of orphanages. Among the over 120 million Nigerians exist stories of women who nurtured other people's children without discrimination and the results of their efforts are there for all to see.

Organisers (DIM) are calling for entries from people who know mothers who have made good success out of other people's children. Entries can be sent in via SMS or email to 08183593220 OR supermomtvshow@gmail.com.

'We need to celebrate mothers who without bias raised kids that are not theirs. Ask any mother, raising kids that are not yours is one of the ultimate sacrifices a woman can make. In their case they have proven that water can be thicker than blood' Sola Fajobi, the executive producer said.
