Man arraigned for snatching bag

A man, Segun Adegoke, 25, has been arraigned before an Oshodi Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, for allegedly snatching a bag owned by Yemisi Banjo, a student of the Lagos State University, Ojo.

Contents of the bag included two grammes of gold worth N17, 000, an LG cell-phone worth N30,000, two small torch-light phones valued at N3,000 each, a wristwatch worth N1,000, cosmetics valued at N7,000, some school ID cards valued at N96,000 and the sum of N35,000.

According to Banjo, on Oct. 12, 2012 at about 7.30 pm, she was walking along Oshodi Road when a man ran into her from behind and snatched her bag.

“I was passing through Oshodi at about 7.30 pm when the guy hit me to the extent that I almost fell. He supported me with his hand and I became unconscious and that was how he took my bag away,” she said.

She stated that fortunately for her on Oct. 22, 2012, she met the man at the same spot. She held his clothe and started shouting for help.

Banjo said, “When I sighted him at that same spot, I grabbed his clothe and started shouting. This alerted the people around. A journalist was present and he questioned us. That was when he confessed to be the person.”

Adegoke, however, told the court that the information before it was not actually what happened.

He said that on the day of the incident, he met Banjo and both of them had a discussion, adding that eventually, she agreed to his proposal.

He said he subsequently took the sum of N13,000 and some gold from her bag when she had left on an errand.

“On that day, after talking with her, I sent her on an errand. This made her to drop her bag and I took some money and gold, which I sold to one Alhaji in Ikorodu for N13,500,” he said.

The magistrate, Mrs. Osho Adebiyi, said since the accused had pleaded not guilty to the charges, his bail application would be granted.

She subsequently granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 before adjourning the case till Nov. 15, 2012.
