Why we shut illegal hospitals - Osun govt

THE Osun State government has said failure to conform with approved standards and refusal to renew operational licences informed its resolve to shut some private hospitals and clinics in Iwo and Ayedire local government areas of the state.

Stating this in Osogbo, on Tuesday, state Commissioner for Health, Dr (Mrs) Temitope Ilori, said four out the hospitals were operating below standards as laid down by the state Ministry of Health.

She maintained that apart from providing medical services in an unhygienic environment, some of the hospitals had failed to renew their operating licensces for years, thus engaging in illegal activities at the detriment of the people.

The affected private hospitals, she said, lacked qualified medical personnel to manage medical outfits, pointing out that “some of the hospitals did not register with the state Ministry of Health and this development negates the prerequisite for the establishment of private hospitals in the state.”

It will be recalled that officials of the Osun State Ministry of Health, at the weekend, stormed Iwo and Ayedire local government areas of the state on an unscheduled inspection and shut some private hospitals.

The hospitals closed down include Oluwade Clinic, Ile-Ogbo, Glory Private Hospital, Olupona, Adunin model clinic, Iwo and Crown private hospital, Iwo.

Dr Ilori said despite several warnings issued by the government, the owners of the hospitals had failed to regularise their registration papers, while prescribed standards and checks, which were designed to guide their services were ignored.
