Fashola’s wife urges care for environment

Wife of the Lagos State Governor, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola, on Tuesday urged traders, artisans and other residents of the state to have caring attitude towards the environment.

Fashola spoke at a one-day Environmental Sanitation Advocacy Seminar for the informal sector by the Ministry of the Environment.

The governor’s wife, who was represented by wife of the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mrs. Rhoda Ayinde, said recent happenings in some parts of the country and around the world, particularly the United States of America, called for reassessment in the way the issues of environment was being handled.

She said, “A major question we must ask ourselves is how our business activities or vocations in the markets or workshops contribute to the poor sanitation in our environment? Once we can answer the questions, we must look into those areas and change our attitude to help combat the impact of climate change.”

She explained that healthy sanitation and hygienic habit include proper disposal of wastes in the market and workshops; and participating actively in the monthly sanitation exercise.

Fashola said it was important for mechanics to know that improper handling of used oil in their workshops was dangerous to human health because it could contaminate the underground water.

The Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello, said a synergy between the government and residents was needed to protect the environment from the danger of climate change.

Bello, who was represented by the Special Adviser to the Governor on the Environment, Dr. Taofeek Folami, said government believed that a healthy environment could be achieved if good sanitary habits was practised by Lagosians.
